Can diesel and petrol layer in a fuel tank leading to problems later?

I filled my diesel car fuel tank with diesel drove 40 miles and it broke down with wrong fuel problems ie petrol contamination. can this be caused by the petrol and diesel not mixing due to lack of agitation and causing a problem later

you should quit driving the car NOW!diesel engines rely on the oil in the fuel to lubricate the fuel pump and other various internal parts, having petrol in your fuel means it is cleaning the oil film off the moving parts causing serious wear which, if left to go on WILL cause catastrophic failure of the moving parts. you MUST drain the tank. cleanse it thoroughly, and the same form the fuel lines, pump and filters, better still, replace the filters. after this you should part fill the tank and run the engine for 15-20 mins. it will smoke at first but this should clear.if it starts sputtering and running unevenly, seek a mechanics advice asap or you may be faced with a hefty bill.

The question didnt ask what should be done it asked can diesel and petrol layer in a fuel tank and cause problems some time after being put into the tank Report It

Yes. Fuel system issues will plague you for a while, unless you spend a bit of money to replace filters, lines, and most of the fuel system. Also, the flash point of petrol is SIGNIFICANTLY less than diesel, so if your engine actually does run, it's going to be poor, at best.
If as you say you filled your diesel tank with diesel you should not have had a wrong fuel problem. If however you filled your diesel car with petrol that is a huge error on your part and can be quite costly.

It would help the absent minded motorist if every garage stuck to the same colours on the fuel pump hoses to stop any confusion.
I fix cars with this problem on a daily basis, we drain the tank thru the fuel filter with an electric pump. we then put approx 锟?0 of diesel in the car and suck the fuel thru past the filter with the electric pump again, replace the pipes and start the car, it may smoke for a little bit ie 5-10mins but after that it is normally ok, we have nevr had any come backs after doing this job and we charge approx 锟?30 inc the fuel todo the job
The two fuels mix pretty fast. The delay in failure is because the engine will run on petrol, but there is no lubricant in it and the injector system wears out fast
