First try going on microsoft's site and search for update KB942615. Download that with whatever browser works for you, and install it. You probably won't be able to get this through windows update, as windows update uses internet explorer, so download the patch directly from the site and install it yourself, it should fix the problem. IE7 problems may be caused by security bugs in it which have been patched already by Microsoft.

If you already have another browser like firefox (I agree, I hate it), you should have no qualms whatsoever about just uninstalling IE7 without necessarily having to clear all your records, and regardless of it having been on your computer already. Any suggestion otherwise probably means they don't know much about computers and are afraid to remove stuff because they don't know what it will do. Most prebuilt computers come with lots of garbage installed on them that can easily be uninstalled without any harm whatsoever. Mozilla doesn't use IE at all, so uninstalling IE wouldn't cause any kind of conflicts as Mozilla is based on netscape, not IE. You could easily download a new copy of IE7 from Mozilla, reinstall IE7, and then uninstall Mozilla forever when IE works again.

Your problem with IE might be spyware related as well. Do not ever install any search bars, or plugins for IE from anywhere but Microsoft. Get a copy of Ad-Aware for free from their site and do a scan of your pc as well, that may get rid of your IE problem in case reinstalling IE doesn't fix it. Good Luck.
If Firefox is slow on your machine, you are probably suffering a spyware or virus infection. Download and updatean anti-spyware scanner, then scan the machine. Then update you virus software and scan with that. Only then try running any patch installs. If you have trouble resolving this, you could try running the repair install by booting from your OS cd, selecting install at the first prompt, then the R repair option at the second.
